Paul P. Butcher was more than just the office manager during his five years with Joyful Noise. He wore many hats around the organization – administrator, volunteer coordinator, house manager, camp organizer – but he will always be remembered most for his humor and ability to make everyone feel at ease.
“Paul always surprised me with his knowledge,” explained Liz Malzak, Paul’s mom. “He seemed to know a little about everything. He could easily strike up a rapport with kids and adults alike.”
Paul’s understanding of the youth was most evident when he put on the cap of camp organizer.
“After ensuring that all camp preparations had been done, he would be the first to join the campers of Chorus Angelicus in all of their goofy traditions – polar bear plunge, skits, original songs, “crocker” and field day. He was a force at camp,” said Sarah Eyre, Office Manager at Joyful Noise.
Paul affected everyone with whom he worked, and offered fairness and wisdom to all of our choristers and their families over those years. To honor Paul’s spirit, the Paul Butcher Memorial Campership Fund was established in 2013 to provide camp and tour scholarships for Chorus Angelicus children in need to facilitate their positive, life-changing experiences through music and friendship.
In the last three years, the scholarship funds have helped numerous choristers attend camp, perform on stage at Avery Fisher Hall, and go on tour to Boston and New Hampshire. This season, the Fund may be even more important than ever. The Junior and Senior choristers of Chorus Angelicus have been invited by the Escolanía El Escorial Boys’ Choir to join in celebrating their 450th anniversary and the feast of Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of the monastery of El Escorial in Madrid, Spain. Besides performing around Madrid, Segovia and Avila, our choristers will participate in a week-long music immersion, attending classes on choral styles, vocal coaching, instrumental lessons on period instruments, Gregorian chant, and the history of choral music. The setting itself, a centuries-old monastery in the outskirts of Madrid, Spain, will provide our singers a magnificent opportunity to learn and practice Spanish, mingle with fellow choristers from across the ocean, and study new music of different styles.
This is a unique and exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our singers! More than just a trip, it will be a fantastic musical experience, which will broaden their cultural and musical horizons. We expect that our students will return home better musicians as well as world citizens. While the monastery is offering our choirs room and board for a very small fee, it will still cost each singer a substantial amount of money to join the tour. Current projections put the cost at $1800 per singer.
In an effort to help make this opportunity financially feasible to as many of the Junior and Senior choristers as possible, Joyful Noise will be fundraising throughout the season to build up the Paul Butcher Memorial Campership Fund. Besides monetary donations, you can support the choirs’ tour to Spain by purchasing beautiful hand crafted gift items made Liz Malzak available at The Bodhi Tree in Litchfield, Backcountry Outfitters in Kent, and Norfolk Artisans Guild in Norfolk. Additionally, items will be offered specifically to benefit the Campership at Joyful Noise’s annual Wine & Beer Tasting on October 22nd at 5 Points Gallery in Torrington, CT.
